Rory paced the hallway in the dilapidated state government building on Livingston Street. The walls were painted the same green as police stations. When he saw Esposito push open the door from the hearing room, and hold it for Harry, the look on his father’s face said it hadn’t gone great.

“So?” Rory asked.

“Had better days,” Harry said.

Esposito made a “we’ll see” kind of face.

Rory, Harry, and Esposito rode down in the elevator in silence amid five other people clutching canes, clamped into neck casts, or just looking plain sick.

Rory helped Harry into the front seat of Esposito’s car and closed the door.

“So?”

“So the faces of the board sank when he said he originally got hurt in the merchant marines,” Esposito said.

“Why?”

“People have opinions about the merchant marines.”

“Based on lies,” Rory said. “It isn’t right. He tried to join the other services….”

“He told them that,” Esposito said. “So maybe that’ll work in his favor. But that he has a spotty work record doesn’t help.”

“That’s because no one’d hire merchant marines, either.”

“We’ll see what happens. This is the state case and he still has the final appeal on the Social Security Insurance disability. But the feds are usually tougher than the state and they’ve already ruled against him twice. Like the song goes, ‘Que sera, sera.’”
